The future of my Room to Read journey

Thus far we have been busy with the Vidyaloka children, teaching them English and giving them other valuable experiences in science and the performing arts. This was achieved through events such as the musical performances, as well as introductions to chemistry (led by Matthew Malith DeSilva) and sustainable composting (led by Mr Ian Lockwood). These experiences have been facilitated by our team at Room to Read, where we were able to collaborate with the guests to give the children valuable experiences through physical demonstration.

However it seems that my time with Room to Read is coming to a close, as I am leaving Sri Lanka and moving to Slovenia at the end of this year, where I am going to continue on my IB journey as I attend Druga Gimnazija Maribor. As I approach this daunting event, I began to wonder what I can do to serve the community throughout the next year. How can I give back to the community as I embark on my IB journey in Slovenia?

At OSC, I have been a member of Room to Read since 9th grade, during which time I have learnt a number of vital leadership and communication skills through teaching English as well as acting as Service Leader. In being part of this group I have also had a tangible effect on the local community, providing English lessons to local children and raising funds for the construction of Vidyaloka school’s library. This long involvement with the group, and my engagement with a cause that I am passionate about, makes leaving them ever more daunting especially as I do not know if I can continue with this kind of work at my new school.

Then I realised…what if I don’t stop with my connection with Room to Read at all? I love helping the children at Vidyaloka and helping them has been a very rewarding and impactful service. Therefore, since their library construction project is still underway and in need of funds, I thought that I could continue raising money in Slovenia which I can send to Room to Read. To this end, I want to use this blog post to brainstorm some ways in which I could raise funds (and awareness of the literacy gap in Sri Lanka) in Slovenia.

Here are some ideas as to how I could approach raising funds:

  1. Corporate Sponsorships: Approach local businesses for donations or sponsorships.
  2. School/Community Events: Organize events like bake sales or friendly basketball matches to raise funds.
  3. Local Media: Get coverage from local newspapers in Slovenia. This would allow me to spread awareness of the issue I am campaigning for.
  4. Social Media: Create a social media campaign where I can post updates on any of my other projects to raise funds as well as share call to action posts.

Learning Outcomes:

  • LO2: Demonstrates initiation of student led activities.
  • LO6: Demonstrates work with global values.
  • LO7: Demonstrates a consideration of ethical implications.
