Over the past weeks I have been participating in Track and Field after school activity at school where I have had the opportunity to develop my physical and interpersonal skills. During these weeks I have constantly been at work trying to improve my personal best times, throws and jumps, all with the aim of improving my own skills while also hoping to be picked to be part of the SAISA travelling team.
The South Asian Inter-Scholastic Association (SAISA) is a group of 11 schools throughout the Indian subcontinent who meet annually in various forms of competitions, including athletics. This year the track and field SAISA competition will be held at the American International School in Chennai (AISC), where a large group of schools including The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) will be meeting to compete.
Last year I also had the opportunity to patriciate in SAISA track and field where OSCs track team also travelled to AISC, competed and placed 2nd overall. Last year I participated in four events, running a 2:18 800m run and 4:54 1500m run as well as throwing shotput and discus. This year I hope to compete in these same events as well as high jump, improving my times more than ever before. To this end I trained since the start of the track and field season, eventually being selected as part of this years travelling team. So far I have worked hard to improve my times and distances at the after school and morning trainings at OSC.
Since the beginning of the December break we have not continued with our group sessions at OSC but I have continued training outside of school, both by myself and with others. I have done home workouts to strengthen my body as well as attended Coach Siriyani Kulawansha’s sessions along with my senior track teammate. I plan to keep up this level of activity throughout the rest of the break and to the end of the track and field season. To this end I plan to enroll to a local gym as well as continue regular distance and speed running trainings both by myself and with Coach Siriyani.
