Catching Waves at Hiriketiya

Recently there has been a lot of stress building up within 12th grade. This has been mainly from knowing our impending doom with the Internal Assessments in most classes right around the corner. But with all this stress and our class being confined to our homes, it has been difficult to get a break. That is why this October break would be a very special trip. It had been revealed last minute that my family and I would be taking a trip down south towards Hiriketiya to help release the stress and actually socially interact with people. Having been trapped within my house, I have had difficulties meeting up with most of my friends, and this trip would give me that chance to actually have some fun and not think about school. Out vacation started as soon as calls on a Friday evening ended. My bags were already packed and besides me as I closed the computer. The ride to the beach would be about four hours long, but it would be worth in the end once we all got the chance to relax in the cold refreshing  waters.

Last year I had the opportunity to go to Hiriketiya for a whole weekend.  This experience was enjoyable as like this year, Covid had become a major pain to everyone’s plans and so by leaving to the beach we had the chance to forget all of that (refer to one of my previous post). However that was already a year ago. Because my sister and I had not touched a surf board in so long, we felt it would be best to take a refresher on how to actually ride the waves. This lesson was a very short one, as excitement had gotten the better of us and we were ready to rush into the ocean as soon as possible. Even though it was a short day because we had arrived late, it was still very exciting knowing what was going to be happening tomorrow. And so the next day arrived, right away early in the morning my sister and I rushed out of bed ready to grab our swim suits and hit the beach. We  spent the rest of the day besides the beach either surfing, resting or eating. This was a very refreshing change from sitting on the computer all day.

Our trip would be like this for two more days, with the weather being almost perfect, almost. On one of those days surfing, we had been relaxing on the waves when the sky was enveloped by the dark looming clouds. All of a sudden the rain came out of no where without any warning, drenching us with both fresh rain and sea water. Overall the trip was a great success, because not only did we get the chance to enjoy surfing and roasting in the sun but we were able to meet with many of our friends.

For a while now, we had not been able to see anyone due to the pandemic, but this beach trip so many people from OSC coincidently chose to escape to the beach. In fact I ended up enjoying it too much, as by the end of the trip I was three shades darker with sunburns across the hands and neck. The learning outcome for this trip was LO#2 Challenge & Skills as I pushed myself with improving my ability to surf while also experimenting with different boards as well.
