Music Learning and Performing

Since I have been a little kid, I have always been introduced to a wide variety of music from my Dad. From the crazy guitar rifts of Prince to the fascinating lyrics by Bob Marley, I have always been surrounded by a wide variety of music. And even though I may not have liked all the music which I have been introduced to I still have a somewhat fond memory of them (although I have no plans of listening to them again).

But it has only been recently I found my interest in listening, learning, and playing the music I have over time become so fond of. Originally I was introduced to the piano, but sadly I did not feel passionate about playing the instrument. However, when I transitioned over to the guitar I found the instrument I was most interested in. At first, I started laying on the acoustic guitar, learning the basics of music from the chords to the strumming patterns. However, as I progressed I became more and more interested in playing the bass and electric guitar.

One of my most memorable moments had to have been when my dad and I made a sudden decision to travel to Singapore over the weekend to see one of his favorite bands U2. This experience did not only further push my interest in music but it also made me begin to appreciate music which I prior to this, had no interest in. But there is more to the story for you to see, while in Singapore we were able to stop by a music store and I was able to purchase my first bass guitar! This would be the start of my process as a beginner

bassist.

As a beginner bassist, I looked to some famous bassists for inspiration to learn. Some of the legends which I have been inspired by was Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers with his iconic slap style to even the origin of funk-styled bass: Lary Graham. However, there were more people I looked up to as well, such as a well-known youtube called Davie504 and TheDoo who helped kickstart my want to play the bass guitar as well as branch out towards the electric guitar as well.

Due to the Covid-19 situation, has allowed me more time to spend on my music practice thus I have been able to improve quite well. Currently, I am trying to finish playing the 21st century (by Red Hot Chillie Peppers) on the guitar as well as the bass. I hope to one day be able to set up a recording station where I can play on my guitar as well as the bass and form the actual song.

This post highlights the learning outcomes LO2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process, as well asĀ  LO4 Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. The reason I chose these two is because through months of practice I have committed to learning a new skill while perservering to learn more songs.
