Yearbook 2018-19 cover design competition

This year, Milo and I participated in the yearbook cover design competition, in which students can design possible yearbook covers, and the winner will have his/her cover used for the yearbook. This year’s theme was Polaroid, and the slogan “take me back”.

Milo and I worked during one lunchtime and met on a Saturday to design a cover, and the result turned out great. After I came up with an initial idea, I put it on paper and showed Milo. It is a pile of Polaroids, with a large one in the middle and having the slogan written on to it. Each Polaroid will have a photo of the year, mainly of events such as SAISA competitions, concerts, plays and other events. We agreed that it was a good idea and it drew the sketch with ballpoint pen in more detail.

I sent the design to Milo, who then created several layers of the design and inserted a few pictures into some of the Polaroids. Initially I planned to take an image of Polaroid frame from the internet and inserted pictures, but Milo tried out several different ideas and we agreed that it looked better if we use the frames that I drew with ballpoint pen, since it added a more artistic component.

The two designs I made: the only difference is the placement of the slogan and “yearbook 2018-19”

We did not fill in each frame since more pictures can be added from later in the year, and we mentioned this when we submitted the design. The central picture will be the graduating class holding a big sign saying “Yearbook 2018-19”. We still have to take that picture, and we also plan to paint the sign on cloth, rather than inserting it using Photoshop, since it will appear more realistic and artistic. We found out a few weeks later that our design was chosen, so we made plans to make the sign out of cloth.

This is the final cover. The rest of the photos will be inserted later in the year.

It took quite a while for us to finish the project due to the large workload for all teh subjects, but we eventually got it done and I am very happy with the result:

I enjoy creating designs, as I also did for the SAISA volleyball kit and several in my previous school, since it is great to see your designs on other people’s shirts or in this case on a book. The process is also a lot of fun, especially when you work with someone else, and this also strengthens my cooperation and communication skills. I also learn to compromise and reach agreements, which is another value skill.
