CIS FRIENDLY SOCCER MATCH

As part of the SAISA Girls’ Soccer team’s training, our coach invited a team from the Colombo International School to come and play a friendly match with us. Having held friendlies with this team for years, it was fun to get together again for the first time this year to play.

This year, the girls’ soccer team had over 25 girls trying out and this game was our last chance to claim a spot on the 16-person traveling team. Because of the abundance of players, Coach Turner split us into two teams of 11 and each team played a 30 minute half of the game. I was put into the second half.

Within the first 15 minutes, our team captain scored us a point from the middle of a particularly crowded area of the field and in a display of excellent footwork. With the team’s spirit lifted, the second half was finished with no further points but some strong defense.

The second half was my turn and despite being placed with some unfamiliar co-players, we pulled through and scored another point within the first 10 minutes of the second half, bringing us up 2-0. There the score stayed until the game was cut short 10 minutes by the rain and lightning.

For me, this game was super significant because it was my first one since surgery and it really revealed how far I’ve come since. As a post-op patient that could barely bend my leg 5 degrees at the knee, playing a game at that level of contact ever again was completely unimaginable. So obviously, it was really important for me to show myself that I was strong enough again. I hope to continue developing this kind of confidence until SAISA.
