DP Orientation Trip

For our DP Orientation, we went to Kitulgala and participated in various activities such as canyoning, rafting, hiking, etc. Many memorable moments were made during this trip, some of which included the many team-building activities we did. I think that this trip personally helped me improve my collaboration skills and helped me connect with other people in my grade, Throughout the trip, I talked to a lot of new people that I hadn’t gotten to know that well before, through this, I think I learned more about people around me. The main activities we did (such as canyoning, rafting, etc.) felt challenging and scary at first, but soon started to feel fun, and felt like I was pushing myself out of my comfort zone. While canyoning, I caught myself looking down and hesitating before jumping for the first time, as at the moment it felt quite nerve-racking.  However, as soon as I touched the water I felt myself wanting to do it again. The feeling right before you’re about to reach the bottom is strangely fun, similar to the feeling you get when someone sneaks up on you to scare you. After a few times, it felt easy and fun. Some smaller activities that required collaboration and thinking such as the games we played after the activities pushed me to be more outspoken about my ideas and also listen to other people so that we could create plans and achieve our goals. Some of the challenges I faced during this trip were hesitation and doubt before trying out different things. All of the activities we did during this trip were not things I would think about doing for fun so they felt abnormal. However, I overcame these challenges by pushing myself to try new things and it eventually paid off, because through this trip I learned many things about myself, other people, and nature, especially when we came across a viper and a strange-looking lizard when we went to the cave with our shadow puppets. The shadow puppets activity in the cave gave me a greater insight into the TOK topics we were recently introduced to at the time which is why I think that this trip also contributed to my learning of more academic-related topics. 🙂
