Mother Tongue Assembly

On the 22nd of February, an assembly was held on the basketball court to celebrate International Mother Language Day, which is celebrated worldwide on February 21 to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. For this occasion, all mother tongue students in middle and high school present a poem, song, and/or story to the entire school to exhibit their skill in another language. As a DP 2 mother tongue student, I was the MC to introduce and bring a close to the celebration. Four of us DP 2 students who were MCs talked about what we were celebrating and gave some context behind the international celebration. We also introduced a guest speaker who is the US ambassador to Sri Lanka and who is a polyglot. After her inspirational speech on how important it is to be multilingual, we introduced the mother tongue students who presented a piece of work in the language they are studying. Fortunately, I was also given the opportunity to share a French poem I chose, Le Dormeur du Val, and introduced to the school the context behind it as well as reading it to them. Once all the mother tongue students had presented, we the MCs brought a close to the assembly.

Learning outcomes:

L02: For this experience, I really had to force myself to come out of my comfort zone in order to speak to the entire school with confidence. Even though I was a bit nervous, I managed to push through and deliver. This experience enabled me to learn the importance of these opportunities to practice my public speaking and build my confidence.
