Reading Buddies

On the 8 of September, two classmates and I took the opportunity to go to the elementary library during an advisory block to read a book to the grade two kids. This allowed us to work on our social skills with younger kids still developing their reading skills. Around an hour before the end of the advisory block, we went to the grade two class to pick up the kids and introduced ourselves. As we got into the library, we split the grade two class into three groups so that we would individually read a book to around 5 kids. To make it more interesting and fun, we asked the grade two kids to pick one book which they wanted us to read. Unfortunately, we only had enough time to read one book to the children. When reading, the kids were very captivated and asked questions when they didn’t understand a word. This was a great experience as it allowed me to learn social skills with younger kids who are not always easy to communicate with.

Learning outcomes:

LO3: This event gave me and my friends to plan and initiate a CAS experience, as we had to communicate with the elementary teachers to see which grade would be open to joining and at what date and time.
