Kidney Close-Up: A Hands-On Journey Through Anatomy!

It may be hard to believe, but this was our very first practical dissection as part of the Biology class of 2025. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to gain hands on experience with dissecting a real-life organ. Seeing the kidney up close was both fascinating and slightly surreal. We carefully examined each part, from the renal cortex to the medulla, gaining a deeper understanding of how these structures function together to filter blood and produce urine. The textures and colors were strikingly different from what we’d seen in diagrams, making the experience even more memorable. Working in pairs, we guided each other through the dissection, comparing our findings and sharing insights along the way. This hands-on approach brought textbook knowledge to life, making anatomy feel much more real than in previous classes. Overall, it was definitely one of the highlights of IB Biology for me, and I hope the school continues to provide more animal organs for us to examine and learn about!
