Housing & Habitat

Housing & Habitat 2019

This is the second year I have been a member of housing and habitat. Like usual we started of the year planning the home run which was schedule to be held on the 16th of November. The home run is a housing and fundraiser habitat event that has been held annually for 5 years, and its a event that continues to be a huge success across the OSC community. The home run is a 5 k run around Battaramulla, its an event that all students, family and teachers can participate in. The reason that housing and habitat host the home run is to help fund raise money for our materials and our service projects.

For many years housing and habitat has been building tables and chairs out of unused pallets of wood and donating those to the Janoda foundation. Last year we spent majority of our time breaking down the pallets of wood so that we could start building the tables and chairs, however we were behind schedule and as a result we weren’t able to start building. We were still able to finish breaking down the pallets, so we came into the new year with our heads held high setting a goal for our selves aiming to finish building all the tables and chairs.

Another thing that we did last year for housing and habitat was our week without walls project were we went to the Janoda foundation which is organization which is involved in the education sector, during our three day stay there we would be teaching kindergarten kids for two days. While we were there we also planted trees around the foundation which was tougher that we were all thinking as the soil was like bedrock. We also did a beach clean up around the Hambantota area, overall my week without walls experience was amazing and it was a great introduction to the program, in addition it just made me more excited for the next one.

This year I made a goal for myself to become the service leader of housing and habitat, last year I helped out with all of the service projects and I also helped buy supplies for the service. However this year I wanted to be more involved in service, so far I helped with the home run video and sourcing the wood for our chairs.
