UN DAY 2019!

UN Day, 2019!

On the 4th of October, OSC held it’s annual celebration of UN Day. I decided to volunteer as a presenter for UN Day this year, the reason is because I thought that it was a good opportunity for me to practice my public speaking, in addition as a MUN representative I thought that
this would be a good opportunity to see what the UN is doing to tackle their sustainable development goals (SDG’s), this year’s SDG is gender equality. We were broken into groups and then given specific issue’s regarding to gender equality, me and my fellow group members were presenting to the DP1’s and the DP2’s and we would be focusing on human trafficking, healthcare, and violence. We were given four weeks to make our presentation and at first, but we didn’t know how to come up with activities revolving around gender equality.  However after talking with our supervisor we had decided to come up with a game of charades where we would give two people a scenario and see how they act them out, we wanted to see how they would involve gender within the scenario, for example, one of the scenarios was a house owner having a conversation with the maid. We kept on meeting with our supervisor and changing details, however as we continued we realized that having three topics is too much information to talk about in the presentation, so after some discussing we had all come to an agreement to get rid of health care from the topics that we would be talking about in our presentation. Another interactive idea that we had was to split the class into groups of four and make them research what certain organizations are doing to prevent human trafficking and violence, they would then write down their findings onto a poster along with a visual representation of the solution, after they have finished they would present their findings to the class. Finally, after weeks in the making our presentation was finished, we were fully prepared for UN Day.

October 4th, The wait is finally over

We started of the day, setting up our presentation and making sure that everything was working. After setting up we went down to the basketball court for the flag parade. While walking down we could see all the flags lined up around the court and all the students in their national dress, it was really colorful and reminded me just how diverse our school really is. The flag parade went on for around twenty minutes which was plenty of time to take a bunch of photos. After the parade we all marched towards the gym for the UN day assembly which focused on Gender Equality, all the speeches were really well delivered and we really well spoken. After the assemble we had a ten minute break a followed by our class presentations, which we were all really looking forward to. Finally it was time for us to present, we started off with our skits which went off really well, the students really enjoyed them and they were also entertaining to watch. After the skits we followed up with the rest of the presentation, the interactive activities went well and the students seemed to enjoy it in particularly the drawing. The Presentation was a huge success and was a great way to move into the lunch sessions
