Cas goals
Over the next two years of my DP program, I am going to be embarking on my CAS journey and sharing my experiences. I will be focusing on the three core parts of CAS which are creativity, action, and service. I am very familiar and very used to participating in my school community, but I am ready to challenge myself and explore new skills that can open u into new experiences and adventures.
Creative
I have been a part of the school productions since the beginning of secondary, this year OSC is planning on doing the musical OLIVER! In December. Singing in musicals isn’t one of my strong points, I lean towards the acting side when it comes to productions. However, this is a perfect opportunity to take me out of my comfort zone. Now I’m not saying that I’ll be getting my own solo, I would probably be pulled off stage with a vaudeville hook by Mrs Duncan. The only time I’ll be singing is in my bedroom with a hairbrush in hand, but it will definitely help my collaboration skills and will come in handy for theatre class. This will help me expand my comfort zone and work on my confidence in singing. ISTA (International Schools of Theatre Association) is definitely something I would be thrilled to attend next year to develop my understanding of the theory of acting. The program allows you to be part of workshops with actors and directors from all over the world. It teaches you a great way to work with people that you’ve never even met before, although, it does sound like a nightmare trying to act like a bumblebee in front of a group of teenagers…but it’s quite a good ice breaker. You learn how to be collaborative with new people which can turn into some of the best friends you will ever make and exercise your creativity. For the past couple of years, I have been a participant in the backstage crew for the winter and spring Gala Concerts aiding Mrs Duncan with music stands, microphones, and the stress of having 10 cords but only one place to plug them in. This allows me to deal with high-stress situations and develops my organization skills as well as work with my fellow crew.
Action
Sports is definitely an area that I don’t lack in, I probably do too many but that’s not what we are focusing on. I have been in OSC’s SAISA teams since 6th grade and have had the pleasure of travelling with our Gecko team. I focus on 3 main sports through the years Swimming, Basketball, and football, I also train with the track team as it’s a sport that I wish there could be 4 SAISA’s for. Sports are a good outlet for staying fit and focusing your energy on something else other than the 6 assignments you have due when you get back home. Looking at football, in particular, I want to be able to expand and play other positions rather than keeping myself stuck to only goalie, I would like to develop my skills as a midfielder. To do this I need to work on my ball-handling skills such as dribbling and accurate passes. I will achieve this by taking part in Thursday’s football that is mixed gender and I have exposure to both the boys and girls football team so they can help me improve. This is going to be a challenge because as goalie I am definitely more reliant on my hands when playing but I want to be able to expand my skills so I can be a more diverse player. I am also hoping to improve my endurance and swimming technique for long-distance so that it will benefit me when I am racing the 400m, I am hoping to achieve this by going to all the morning trainings for the SAISA season which are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6am – 7am.
Service
I am currently the service leader of Housing & Habitat and our goal is to aid our local Sri Lankan community by building useful items. We also teach our members to use their hands and build motor skills by doing carpentry work. This would be like working with a hammer, nails, saws, and drills. One of the main events that we run for funding is the home run which is a 5k that the school participates in every year on a Saturday. This year we are planning on doing the same thing but building on the feedback that we got from last year and giving the runner a new route. We also want to aim to have more participants attend by advertising the event better with creating posters, and a video that connects our service to the run. We are also in the beginning steps of working on a project for the Janoda foundation, we plan on creating a train railway for the local children so that they can learn their colours and numbers in English. We hope that it can be a contribution during WWW so we can help their learning. Another long term project that we plan on working on is building tables and chairs for the school at the Janoda foundation. This is a goal that will take a lot of time, therefore, its something that we will be working on over the next two years. Lastly, I am hoping to work on the habitat side of our service as its something that is neglected, so I plan on helping with the climate strike happening on the 27th of September and creating awareness with my fellow service leaders to our climate crisis. Lastly, I want to create awareness about our climate crisis on housing and habitat social media, I want the posts to educate students about the climate changes, animal abuse, infographics, supporting other services, etc. I am hoping to post one every week. This will be a long term goal that will hopefully continue over the 2 years.
