Eleez’s Diving Course

Diving has been something I’ve done recreationally several times in the past, both in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Over the break, I got the opportunity to go back to the Maldives, where I got the chance to complete some of the PADI Open Water sessions I had left with Moodhu Bulhaa (dive centre). During these sessions, I learned lots about the technicalities of the gear and how to use them at different times. My buddy’s name was Hūdhu; I had two different instructors throughout the course, Firu and Andreas, both of whom taught me a lot while making the course fun and interesting. Skills took up a fair amount of the time; however, Hūdhu and I still managed to explore the reefs of Villingili (where we did our dives). Villingili is an isle situated in Kaafu Atoll and is a five-minute ferry ride from the capital. The island itself is residential and has a lovely public beach with a good drop, perfect for diving and possible also casual snorkelling. The lowest I went was 15m, and when down, there saw several kinds of starfish, eels, and octopi. I also saw entire schools of angelfish travelling, which was beautiful. The water was very clear, and the light penetrated nicely the days I was there, so we were pretty lucky with visibility. I hope to go back soon to start my PADI Open Water Advanced. With this, I can get my Adventure Diver certification allowing me to do the Wreck Diver Specialty Course. This course is best for learning techniques because confinement is introduced, making it all the more interesting.
