Given the mounting situation in Gaza, me and Akash saw the critical need for immediate assistance, particularly for children whose access to basic essentials such as food, water, and medical care has been severely limited. As a result, me and my fellow service leader Akash decided to organize a swim-a-thon fundraiser in favor of Save the Children. This organization provides critical aid to these children living in unsafe situations. We emailed the OSC community asking everyone to join in the swim-a-thon on May 18th, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the OSC Swimming Pool. We urged participants to seek sponsorship from parents, relatives, and other supporters, with a promise of 100 LKR every lap (1 lap equals 50 meters). They (including Akash and I) swam a total of 939 laps (46.95 kilometers) and raised an outstanding LKR 461,800 (1,549 USD) in commitments and additional donations. We are grateful to Mr. Shaki, who volunteered as the event’s lifeguard, assuring the safety of all attendees. We’d also like to thank Skinny Sudha for graciously supplying food and beverages that kept everyone energized and hydrated.
This initiative has been a tremendous reminder of the effect we can have as a community when we work together for a common goal. It also emphasized the need for timely mobilization and our supporters’ generosity. We are proud of our accomplishments and appreciative to everyone who contributed to the success of this event. Together, we have made a significant difference in the lives of children in distress. Let us continue to help people in need and promote good change with our deeds.
