This Saturday, school hosted an open day for prospective parents to view the school and get some insight into the IB curriculum. Some student ambassadors were required to help out with touring around the parents and children and I immediately signed up.
When I was handed the route, I talked with the other ambassadors and ensured that everyone knew where the locations were as well as familiarized myself with the bullet points highlighting what our school facilities offered. I made sure to memorize the route to some extent to ensure that I would smoothly transition between the different locations.
I was partnered with a current parent at the school, and we together informed them of our campus and our area. I had the delight to tour around a future 9th grader whose mother already worked in the primary area of the school. Since she was already very familiar with the primary campus and wouldn’t be going there, we could spend more time focusing on the secondary facilities and her interests which included swimming, mathematics, and art.
I introduced her to Ms Eagle the art teacher for secondary, and showed her the spaces in which she could carry out her artistic abilities. Getting to know her better ensured I could give her a more personalised tour. The parent assisting me, Ms Susie Brown, was able to go more in depth about the SAISA experience as her sons are all very into sports and often partake in the sports tournaments. I enjoyed getting to know her and hope I did our school justice because it truly is an amazing fit for her.
I had to be very aware of what I was saying as I couldn’t be passing over any false information and made it clear whenever I wasn’t too sure of the answer to questions, luckily I didn’t have to worry about this because to my surprise I am very well versed in OSC (LO7). As I talked to the parents I saw their views on bringing their kids to the school, since for them its not only the education but the opportunities it grants their children.
After the tour we headed to the cafeteria for some refreshments and food (my faves including samosas and chicken wraps🌯).
Soon after we moved over to the auditorium for the presentation. Together with Stefan, I was presenting on Eco-Schools and what we have done and are currently doing. I was very proud on how we conveyed the information and I do think it struck the audience deeply. We spoke about the green flag award, our 3 chosen themes, and how we have impacted our community.
I really enjoyed today as I was able to learn more about my school, but also had another opportunity to speak in front of people about my passion to take care and nurture the world. I have learned to be more confident and especially on this day when I was very nervous, found ways to cope with the stress and was able to go through the slides without a script.
