Mosquito fogging doesn’t only kill mosquitoes, but also other essential wildlife such as bees, butterflies and dragonflies. According to the US Fish and Wildlife service there are over 70 endangered pollinators. A solution to this is to plant flora that have natural scents that repel them. So that is exactly what we did.
During Eco-schools today we collected plant pots from the bus parking lot, and placed them around school. We made sure to place them in places where they would get plenty of sunlight, but also out of the way of people’s paths so they wouldn’t get knocked over. We thought of placing them on the lockers but then quickly realised how when we would water them the water would seep out onto the lockers and ran the risk of getting people’s stuff dirty.
There were many people who were very excited about it and when I spoke to them this morning, they suggested ideas of how we could even add the leaves to our own meals at school and use it in the cafeteria. I am really glad that people are now reflecting on the benefit of our actions without us needing to prompt them. It shows how the eco-friendly mindset has spread. Ms Melinda even stated that she “want(s) all of them outside my class in a row,” (translated from Dutch).
