Staying Active and Training

Since Face to Face (F2F) school ended, due to a second round of COVID-19 here in Sri Lanka, we have been doing school online at home, in our Distance Learning Program (the DLP). Although I don’t mind the DLP ( but I like F2F school much more), I knew that we were being much less active at home than we are at school. Even when we were F2F, our After School Activity (ASA) program did not startup, and we were not doing as much exercise and activity as we normally would be doing. Normally, I would be training for the SAISA volleyball competition in the first season, Basketball for the second, and Football (Soccer) for the last season. However, since SAISA’s were cancelled due to COVID-19, we made due by playing these sports during our lunch and break time while we were at school F2F. However, not we are doing the DLP, we cannot play sports outside (with other people) during lunchtimes.

This term, however, the ASA program did start virtually. I signed up for 4 different After-School Activities (Volleyball on Monday, Basketball on Tuesday, Service (Care for Paws) on Thursday, and Football – Soccer – on Friday). I have been playing an hour of sports (to practice and train for when SAISA begins again), every day after school for 30 minutes to 1 hour.  I join the activities I signed up for and did the ASA on those days, and for all the other days of the week, I go outside and play these sports with my brothers – Ethan, and Isaac, as well as my parents. I work collaboratively with both my brothers and mom, to help us build off of each other, support each other and better develop our skills. I also play a lot with my Mom, Kelly who is also my Volleyball head coach. She always helps me with good feedback to improve my skills and techniques, and I also always take videos of myself to look back on my form to make sure I am passing correctly (as often, I do not move my feet fast enough, and I swing my arms too high). I also do this with my setting and hitting skills, but for now, I am working to improve passing bumps first.

I really enjoy playing volleyball with my brothers, and we do rallies, peppers, and we even have a volleyball net to practice serving and hitting. I try to coach them a little bit and teach them good technique. We also play basketball very often, where Ethan tries to coach me and teach me some skills that I do not know yet. I have not played much Football yet, but my first ASA is tomorrow, which I will gladly join. I also might begin doing some virtual TAFA (a football club outside of school) sessions, where we work on fitness and ball skills.

I also want to begin to take some walks every day after school (with my dog, Sammy), so that she gets some exercise (as she is a little bit chubby), and I get some fresh air.
