Ben's CAS Journey

Snapshots from my learning in the IB Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS) program

CAS Project – Initial Ideas

One of the requirements of the CAS program is to complete a CAS Project, where students must plan a ‘collaborative, well-considered series of sequential CAS experiences, engaging students in one or more of the CAS strands of creativity, activity, and service.’ The primary purpose of the CAS project is sustained collaboration.

When beginning to brainstorm what I could do as my project, I thought of two possible ideas. The first idea was related to my service group, which is RCCI. Although there has not been service so far this academic year, there is hope that it will be resumed following the December holidays. Last year, I engaged in a CAS experience planned by our at the time DP2 service leaders, in an online capacity. The leaders decided to do an art session online, as they had done one previously (when I was part of a different service), where they had gotten terrific feedback on it. The session was done through an online video call, and we received terrific feedback from all involved parties. Not only were many of the students extremely talented, but they seemed to enjoy it as well.

Therefore, we have the idea of hosting another art session. Ideally, this will be in person which will be much more interactive for the students. In the event that it is online, we can construct it in a similar format to last year, where we sent out certain stationary and art equipment to the RCCI school to be distributed amongst the students.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. (LO3) Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
  2. (LO2) Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
  3. (LO7) Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

My second idea relates to activity and creativity, but can possibly also be considered a service. It was recently announced that after school activities will return following the December holiday. When I was in middle school, I recall some students from DP who came and helped coach middle school sports, be it football or basketball. From this, I got the idea that I could also help in coaching one of the middle school sports teams. The goal would be to plan specific drills for the sessions, and aim to apply developed skills to a match situation against other schools (COVID dependent). I could use drills from my past several years playing the sport, and also research other drills that would be helpful.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. LO3 Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
  2. LO2 Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
