Being quarantined at home without a studio has all dancers around the globe joining on social media platforms for live classes. An unexpected positive of this curfew is that it’s given me the opportunity to learn from all dancers I’ve admired for years through online classes. Needing to work on my technique and strength I’ve been doing some barre as well as contemporary classes at home. I try to work it into my schedule daily and try to spend at least 1 and half hours everyday dancing. Honestly, it gives me something to look forward to and helps relieve the stress of the DLP. The dance school I go to has also begun short zoom classes on Wednesdays in order to teach us syllabus content for our RAD exams at the end of the year.
So far I’ve followed classes conducted by Tiler Peck, Kathryn Morgan, and Mariah Khoreva all of which are leading names in the ballet world. While these aren’t live classes were you get any feedback its nice to be able to take my time to learn an exercise and work my technique independently. The classes are also very challenging in terms of technique and learning more complex combinations than what I’m used to.
I’ve also taken the time to work on my improv skills. Improv in dance as the term suggests, is when a dancer simply dances to a chosen piece of music without any prior choreography. I usually try to incorporate short improv sessions as part of my warmup or after a long barre class. Improving is helping me work on my musicality which as an area of my dancing which I hope to improve.
