Starting the Batting Sports ASA

I have always loved playing cricket and as a result have been naturally inclined to batting sports like softball. When I lived in Bangladesh, I captained the cricket team for a couple of months as well, but did not continue the sport as it was not offered at OSC. I had wanted to start a cricket ASA back when I first joined OSC, but the idea never really came into fruition as I was very busy with a variety of other extra-curricular involvements and the fact that I could never really identify a large enough group of interested students. This changed a couple of weeks ago, when a couple of friends and I began playing cricket during lunch and break times and we started talking about initiating a cricket ASA.

I pondered on the idea for a while, until finally deciding with a couple of peers (Divyanshu and Arnav) that we should go for it and start a cricket ASA. We were still not completely sure that there would be enough interested students and also weren’t ready to commit too much time to the ASA, so we decided that the ASA would be less competitive and be more of a fun or intramural sporting activity. The next step was to find a keen supervisor to spend a couple of hours every week for the ASA. A few teachers came to mind, but we decided on Dr. Leigh, who had commented on our lunch time cricket matches after an English class and seemed really interested in the game. He took the opportunity with both hands and also suggested that we could make the activity a batting sports activity that included softball as well because he was an expert in the game and it would also allow us to attract more students. After that, it wasn’t too difficult to contact Mr. Van Zijl, the activities coordinator, to get our activity up and running on Fridays after school. The first session will take place after our short fall break, and I can’t wait to get started. We will be alternating between softball and cricket each week over the course of the quarter.
