Swim-a-thon for Save The Children (Gaza)

In light of the escalating crisis in Gaza, I recognized the dire need for immediate aid, especially for children whose access to basic necessities like food, water, and medical care has been severely compromised. For this reason, me and Ethan decided to organize a swim-a-thon fundraiser for in support of Save the Children, an organization providing vital assistance to these children under hazardous conditions. We communicated our plan to the OSC community through an email, inviting everyone to participate in the swim-a-thon scheduled for May 18th, from 9 AM to 12 PM at the OSC Swimming Pool. We encouraged participants to secure sponsorship donations from parents, friends, and other supporters, with a pledge of 100 LKR per lap (1 lap = 50 meters). For example, a commitment to swim 10 laps would equate to a 1000 LKR donation, with all proceeds going directly to Save the Children. On the day of the event, despite the short notice, we were thrilled to see a turnout of 33 swimmers, including students, teachers, and parents. Collectively, they (including me and Ethan) swam a total of 939 laps, equivalent to 46.95 kilometers, and raised an impressive LKR 461,800 (1,549 USD) through pledges and additional donations. Our gratitude extends to Mr. Shaki, who volunteered as the lifeguard for the event, ensuring the safety of all participants. We also thank Skinny Sudha for generously providing food and drinks, which kept everyone energized and hydrated.

This project has been a powerful reminder of the impact we can make as a community when we come together for a common cause. It also highlighted the importance of quick mobilization and the generosity of our supporters. We are immensely proud of what we achieved and grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of this fundraiser. Together, we have made a meaningful difference in the lives of children in crisis. Let’s continue to support those in need and inspire positive change through our actions.
