My service is the Temple School service group and we help children from the Temple School who come from less fortunate families to have experiences that a child their age from the overseas School fo Colombo would have. We meet every Thursday afterschool for an hour and we play, teach and celebrate with around 15 kids from the Temple School. There are 9 service memebrs in our service and therefore, each service member is in charge of two kids where they are able to develop a relationship with the two kids that they’ve been assigned with and they are responsible in identifying the needs and weaknesses of the children and developing them. I am the service leader of this service group along with Hamda the service coleader but this year, I wanted all th service members to be in charge of at least one activity planned for that week. That way, the service members will be able to develop leadership and communication skills and through the activities they initiate and this will also develop a sense of responsibilty. We have one activity planned to do with the kids for every week where we either play with them, teach them something new, bake with them, take them to the library and read books or do some craft work. This planning process is part of my CAS project and further information regarding this will be on another post where I talk about my CAS project, it’s purpose and what I hope to achieve by the end of it. Some of the service activites which I planned have gone very well but some have not because sometimes the people incharge of that activity are not prepared for it. But as the service leader it’s my duty to guide them and help them understand that they should be prepared and I too have to understand that they are still learnign how to plan and initiate activities hence, they will develop these skills over time with expereince.
