Batting sports ASA

Cricket is a sport that I have been playing since childhood, and I used to play it every week with my friends back in the US. When I first came to Sri Lanka, I was surprised that our school did not have cricket because of the popularity of the sport here. I always wanted to introduce cricket at OSC, but to be honest, not many people were interested in cricket. Besides, I was already doing other extracurricular activities after school. Recently, I started playing cricket with my peers (Anuda and Divyanshu) at lunchtime. Usually, we play volleyball during lunch, but we decided to play some cricket because of the rains in the past few weeks. It was because of this reason that we came across the idea of introducing cricket as an after school activity(LO3 & LO4).

The aim of this activity is to enjoy and have fun rather than playing competitively, and instead of focusing on just cricket, we will also play softball. We will alternate between the two sports every week. After planning out some of the essential things needed for our ASA, we needed to find a supervisor. Fortunately, one of the teachers, Dr. Leigh, who was quite interested in learning cricket, agreed to be our supervisor. He knew how to play softball too, so it was a win-win situation for us. We wanted to pick a day that was not only suitable for everyone but also when there were no other after school activities happening. We talked to the ASA coordinator, Mr. Van Zijl, and discussed our plans for the ASA. He told us that Friday was a day that was free, but one of the problems was that the track and field team would be using the ground after school. We chose to stick to Friday as it was one of the days where you didn’t have to worry about submitting your work the next day, but we needed a place to play.  Fortunately for us, the primary school ground was available, and so we decided to use that because it was better than nothing. We start this quarter, and I am very excited to get a chance to improve my skills in cricket (LO1) to learn how to play softball (LO2)!
