Room to Read

focuses on the development of libraries in local communities, the goal of this service is to encourage reading for pleasure and learning accessible to all, and spreading our love of books. the service at overseas schools consists of a partnership with two local schools, Bapajaya Vidyaloka Maha Vidyalaya and Vidhyawardene. Apparently, it started off with a service aiming to raise funds through book drives and other things until a past member and the current service leader(Aura Datta), with the help of the service supervisor (shout out to Mrs.Lockwood)decided to bring in the students of vidyaloka school and help them improve their English speaking skills, I find that to be a pretty cute origin story.

Why did I choose this service?

Not many know this but the first time I visited this school, which was on open day I was already very intrigued by their second-hand book store which was near the reception area with that they raised funds to support the two libraries they have partnered and to add more to that, there was a moment where a few service leaders had spoken up about ……

I believe that from my personal experiences and what has been done this past year with the service I can contribute to this service room by reading participating in most school events and raising funds during community book sales, and workshops.

for me as a new student, I really struggled with choosing a service, every service here at OSC has meaning, and the area is all so extremely interesting not to mention that I have not had any exposure to being part of a service, however. the only sort of experience I had from last year was an online internship teaching English through simple exercises and worksheets at an NGO focused on educating girls and increasing literacy in New Delhi.

How does the service work?

Every Thursday we conduct workshop sessions with the young students from the Vidyaloka school!
