Decorating My Brother’s Bedroom!

As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I really enjoy decorating rooms, and trying to have them reflect the person they belong to. So, during this April break, my brother came to me, asking for help to make his room feel more cozy and personal. I immediately jumped at the opportunity, and we began planning what his setup would be.

After a few hours of planning, we decided to get started. The process was three-fold; painting the wall behind his bed blue, creating a “meme-wall”, and finally, setting up a comfortable desk area where he could be productive.

The first part was painting his wall. While this was the most challenging part, it was also the most fun! My brother promised me that he would help out, and do at least 50% by himself, but of course, it never happened. He barely did more than a few rolls of the brush before he began complaining that his arm was tired. He was right, painting a whole wall is extremely tiring for the arms! But I was still angry that he just sat and watched while I did all the hard work…in the end, he gave me a packet of his Cheetos, and I happily continued the task by myself.

Once that was complete, we moved on to the wall across his bed. He decided that he wanted to cover it with his favorite memes. I begged him to go with my idea, which was to put up a collage of photos of him and his friends and family, but he was adamant. This process was easier on the arms, but quite tedious and time consuming. Once he had chosen the memes he wanted, we printed them out, and then I sat and cut out all the white edges that he didn’t want, and stuck them up for him. He gave me more Cheetos, so that I wouldn’t complain while he relaxed and watched Netflix, and I slaved away, working to make his room better!

Finally, I set up a small working area. My brother often struggles with time management, so we made a space where he could write down all his pending assignments and work, for both in and out of school. I told him that he couldn’t ever have more than four tasks pending, and he has done a pretty good job sticking to my rule! I also wanted to put up a few motivational and encouraging quotes about hard work and success above his desk (I do love quotes!) but there was only one that we agreed on, so we just put that up!

The whole process was so much fun, and while it was a lot of work, I enjoyed every minute! I was quite sad when I finished. I hope I get to do up another room soon, I’m still working on my parents to let me paint their wall next!

Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth – I would say that decorating rooms is a strength of mine, since I am a creative person. I was very proud of the work I did in my room (details are in a precious post), and my creativity allows me to help bring a vision to life.

2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process – Teaching myself to paint a wall was definitely a challenge! It was a long and tiring process, and by the end of it, I had defiantly acquired new skills.

5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively – I worked with my brother to plan the look he wanted for his room. He also helped me a little as I painted the wall!
