Decorating My Bedroom

One of my favourite things to do when I’m bored, is decorate my room! Last year, I painted an entire wall pink (my favorite colour) and covered it with posters of my favourite book quotes which I hand-wrote myself (based off inspiration from Pinterest). I love my quotes wall, and I think it is the perfect way to wake up in morning. As soon as I wake up, my quotes are the first thing I see, and I think that it’s a beautiful and positive way to start the day!

Towards the end of the winter break, I made a massive change, shifting the position of my bed, desk, and dressing table. This change made more space in my room, as well as freed up an entire wall. Those of you that know me well will know that I hate white walls. So of course, this was an opportunity for me to get creative, and  come up with a way to cover it up! I spent a long time on Amazon.com, looking for the perfect thing to buy, and eventually, I found it! It was a black wall sticker of dandelions and butterflies, and I absolutely loved it. I was about to ask my mom how we could get it delivered to Sri Lanka, when I felt a little sad. Getting things from Amazon usually took a long time, since we had to wait for someone who was coming to Sri Lanka from the US or Singapore. And I really didn’t want that plain wall in my room for so long! Suddenly, it struck me – Why didn’t I just paint the sticker onto the wall instead? This was a great idea since it meant I could customise the mural a little as well! And so, I started the process. The first step was to draw the mural on my wall in pencil. This part didn’t take me too long, as I was very roughly sketching and erasing. I had it done in a less than a day.

The next step was to actually paint the mural. Since there were such fine lines on the dandelion seeds, I decided to go over those in a black sharpie, and then paint the thicker parts. I began this process, but it took a lot longer than I thought! I had to draw every line on the dandelion seeds, and had barely finished half of them before school started again. I was pulled back into the flow of assignments, and didn’t go back to the mural for a long time. Then, last weekend, I was frustrated with myself. I was staring at my incomplete wall, and decided to finish it! I grabbed my marker, and worked at the wall for 3 hours straight, and I was done!

I think it looks fantastic. My lines are a little wobbly, and not very even, but I love that I did it myself, instead of just buying a sticker. I especially love the way it curves over my beanbag! I love waking up next to this wall, and having it to look at as I work all day. I’m really proud of my room, and I think it reflects my personality super accurately! This wall truly made my room cozier, and more my own, and I’m glad I thought of this idea.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth – I would say that decorating rooms is a strength of mine, since I am a creative person. I was very proud of the work I did in my room, since my creativity allowed me to help bring a vision to life.

2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process – Teaching myself to paint a wall was definitely a challenge! It was a long and tiring process, and by the end of it, I had defiantly acquired new skills. Additionally, to make my quotes wall, I decided to learn calligraphy off Youtube and Pinterest!
